ADHD

Understanding ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties with attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. This can affect children and adults differently, impacting academic, professional, and social functioning. Common symptoms include problems paying attention, difficulty focusing for extended periods, disorganization, challenges with problem-solving and time management, fidgeting, talking excessively, and acting without thinking.

Possible Risk Factors

There are no definitive causes of ADHD, however, there are a few elements that increase the likelihood. Family history plays a significant role. Prenatal factors, such as maternal substance use during pregnancy, premature birth, and low birth weight. Environmental toxins, like lead exposure, and adverse social and family environments, including poverty, bullying, negative parenting, or family discord, can increase the risk. Additionally, childhood trauma and early life stress can impact brain development, potentially leading to ADHD symptoms.

Potential Impact

ADHD can significantly disrupt multiple areas of life. In children, it often leads to poor academic performance due to concentration issues, organizational difficulties, and the inability to sit still for long periods. For adults, maintaining relationships, meeting work deadlines, and handling daily tasks can contribute to low self-esteem and overall emotional distress. These ongoing challenges and feelings of frustration and inadequacy can significantly increase the risk of developing anxiety and depression.

Our Approach

  • Medication Management: If necessary, prescribing stimulant or non-stimulant medications to improve focus, reduce hyperactivity, and control impulsive behaviors.
  • Psychotherapy: Implementing behavior modification strategies, parent education, and social skills training to manage symptoms and improve behavior. It focuses on changing negative thought patterns, developing organizational skills, and enhancing problem-solving abilities.
  • Specialized Lab Testing: Select appropriate diagnostic laboratory tests to identify any biological factors that may contribute to or worsen symptoms, such as levels of essential nutrients, food allergies or sensitivities, thyroid function, and exposure to environmental toxins. Additionally, we utilize a computer-based screener known as QbTest to assess levels of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
  • Lifestyle Coaching: Encouraging regular exercise, a healthy diet removing processed foods and artificial ingredients, ensuring adequate sleep, and creating structured routines.
  • Holistic Therapy: Integrate activities such as Tai Chi, yoga, time in nature, meditation, natural supplements, and reduced technology exposure to foster mindfulness, enhance focus, stabilize emotions, and reduce stress.
  • Accommodations: Applying school or workplace accommodations such as extended time on tests, organizational aids, or modified work environments to help individuals succeed academically or professionally.

Common ADHD Disorders

  • Predominantly Inattentive Presentation:Characterized primarily by difficulties with attention and focus, such as frequent careless mistakes, short attention span, and avoiding difficult tasks.
  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation: Characterized mainly by excessive fidgeting, difficulty staying seated, and interrupting others.
  • Combined Presentation:Features a mix of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms, which is the most common type.
